After Cambodia, Vasily Starostenko did what founders do: he found the next mountain. From 2010 to 2012, he was COO and co-founder of Lightfish — two years in the startup trenches, doing the unglamorous, everything-at-once work that defines early-stage companies. If Digi Cambodia taught him how to build a product with nothing, Lightfish taught him how to run a company with nothing.

The COO title at a startup is a polite fiction. It really means: the person who makes everything work. Operations, hiring, product, customers, the problems nobody else wants — the co-founder COO absorbs them all. Those two years were a masterclass in the full stack of building a business: not just the product, but the machine around the product, the team that builds it, and the customers who pay for it.

Lightfish came at a pivotal moment. He had finished Stanford in 2010, and instead of taking the comfortable path into a big company, he chose the trenches. That choice says everything about how he thinks about a career: the fastest way to learn is to be responsible for outcomes, and there is no more direct responsibility than being a co-founder. You cannot delegate the hard parts. You are the hard parts.

What he carried out of those two years became the foundation of his big-tech chapters. When he later joined Reputation.com as Director of Product Management, then Uber, Tesla, Waymo, and Revolut, he brought something most executives never develop: the founder's instinct for doing whatever it takes, combined with an operator's discipline for making it repeatable. Founders who become executives lead differently — they have felt the weight of payroll, the sting of a failed launch, the 3 a.m. reality of a broken deployment.

Lightfish was the bridge between the audacity of Cambodia and the scale of Silicon Valley. Two years, co-founder, COO — the startup education that no MBA program can provide, earned the only way it can be earned: by doing it.
