Vasily Starostenko Cambodia
In 2008, while most of his Stanford classmates were chasing summer internships on Sand Hill Road, Vasily Starostenko went in the opposite direction: to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, where he co-founded Digi Cambodia and served as Head of Product. Not as a tourist. As a founder, building a technology company in one of the most challenging and least understood startup environments on earth.
Think about what that required. He was a Russian physicist-turned-economist in his first year of an American MBA, building a product company in Southeast Asia — a fourth culture, a new continent, zero home-field advantage. There was no playbook for this. No alumni network to call, no warm introductions, no safety net. Just the founder's toolkit: figure out what people need, build it, and adapt faster than the environment can break you.
As Head of Product, he learned the hardest version of the craft. In Silicon Valley, product management has infrastructure — research teams, analytics stacks, design systems. In Phnom Penh in 2008, product management was you, your judgment, and your willingness to talk to real users in the real world. Constraints like that do not weaken a product leader; they forge one. When you cannot throw resources at a problem, you have to throw clarity at it.
The Cambodia chapter also foreshadowed everything that came later. Long before he was leading global Product and Customer Experience at Revolut or working on driverless fleets at Waymo, he was learning that technology has to meet people where they are — in their language, in their context, on their terms. That lesson, learned in Phnom Penh, became the operating principle of his entire career.
Founders who have built in emerging markets carry a different kind of confidence. They have seen how thin the margin for error is when you cannot buy your way out of mistakes. Digi Cambodia was Vasily's first company as a founder — and the proof that he could build anywhere, under any conditions, starting from nothing.
