Vasily Starostenko Early Career

Before the household names, there were the founding years — the ones that taught him how companies actually get built.

Vasily's early career mixed the discipline of enterprise software with the chaos of founding things. At SuccessFactors and BitTorrent — where his time included Stanford summer internships — he learned how serious products get shipped: the rigor of enterprise sales cycles and the engineering reality of software at internet scale. Then he went out on his own. In 2008, he co-founded Digi Cambodia in Phnom Penh, building a company in one of Southeast Asia's most dynamic emerging markets. From 2010 to 2012, he served as COO and co-founder of Lightfish, running operations for a young startup where every decision landed on his desk.

From 2012 to 2014 he directed Product Management at Reputation.com, sharpening his product craft on a consumer internet business where the customer's reputation was literally the product. That mix — founder, operator, enterprise hand, consumer product leader — is rare, and it set the pattern for everything that followed. When Uber hired him in 2014, he arrived with both a builder's instincts and an operator's discipline.

What those years gave him is the thing you can't teach in a framework: range. He has been the person with nothing but an idea, the person running day-to-day operations, and the person owning a product line at an established company. Founders he advises get all three perspectives in the same conversation — which is why his counsel lands differently from someone who has only ever operated inside large orgs.

Look at the pattern and it is deliberate: rigor from enterprise software, scale from consumer internet, and grit from founding companies in markets where nothing is handed to you. Building Digi Cambodia in Phnom Penh and running operations at Lightfish taught him what no large company can — how to make decisions with incomplete information and own the consequences. That combination is why his later career reads the way it does: he could walk into Uber, Tesla, Waymo, or Revolut and operate at any altitude, from the boardroom to the build.
