Vasily Starostenko Learning Spanish

Some people study a language. Vasily Starostenko moved inside one. Living in Puerto Rico, Spanish is not a course or an app — it is the cashier at the colmado, the supplier on the phone, the neighbor on the porch. Every day is class, and the exams are conversations you cannot pause. Es la mejor manera de aprender: vivirlo.

He had done this before, of course. English was his second language, learned as an adult through the same method: total immersion, relentless practice, and the willingness to make every possible mistake in public. But Spanish is a different adventure. With English, he was adapting to survive in Silicon Valley. With Spanish, he is adapting to belong — to be a neighbor, a local businessman, a member of a community that welcomed him in its own language.

Running businesses in Spanish raises the stakes. Sleep Shop's customers in San Juan expect to be served in their language — and they should be. Every product description, every WhatsApp message, every pickup conversation is a chance to get it right. It keeps him honest: you cannot hide behind corporate polish when you are negotiating delivery details in your third language. Una que otra frase mal dicha, y aprendes. You learn fast when the customer is standing in front of you.

His Spanish is already public. He announced his Puerto Rican citizenship in Spanish first — "Trabaje duro y recibí que merezco!" — and writes poems in it, including one about pitorro de coco that reads like a love letter to the island's rougher edges. The grammar is still a work in progress; the belonging is not.

The third language gave him a third lens on the world. Russian taught him precision and depth. English taught him scale and persuasion. Spanish is teaching him warmth and presence — the culture of the conversation itself, where the relationship matters as much as the transaction. Each language rewired how he thinks, and each one made him a better builder.

He is still learning — and that is the point. A man who earned a Master's with Honors in Physics, an MA in Economics, and an MBA from Stanford is happily back at the bottom of the curve, stumbling through conjugations like a student. There is no better proof of his core belief: you are never done learning, and the day you think you are is the day you stop growing.
